The Passing of Coach Jimmy Joe Jackson

We have just received word that Coach Jackson passed away this week. Coach Jackson was a powerful force in Boxwell’s early history, serving as Camp Director at Rock Island before spending a number of years as program director at Parnell (1963-1970). He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, who herself was a camp director for Camp Murrey. The following is the obituary from The Tennessean.com.

“JACKSON, James Richard “Coach Jimmy Joe”Age 82 of Nashville, TN. The beloved husband of Elizabeth Ann Wolff Jackson entered into eternal peace on July 8, 2010 while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 14, 1927 in Decherd, TN, the son of the late Belle Stubblefield and Stonewall Jackson. In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by his daughter, Cathy J. Turner and husband Rick; granddaughter, Lacy T. Huddleston and husband Jarrod; sister, Minnie Raider. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Larry Stewart Jackson; brother, Samuel Jackson. Mr. Jackson was a veteran of the United States Navy in World War II; taught history at Smyrna, Joelton and Antioch High Schools; coached 3 State Football Championship teams in Metro Nashville Public Schools; and retired from Metro Schools after positively impacting young people for 30 years. He served as the Director of Camp Parnell at Boxwell Boy Scout Reservation for 12 years; was a member of the Shriners’ and a Mason. Mr. Jackson was a devout Christian and attended Woodbine United Methodist Church. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mr. Jackson’s former football players. A graveside service with Military Honors will be conducted for family and friends on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park (Park View section on the south side of Thompson Lane).
