We are sad to announce the passing of Garland Russell, Stahlman Program Director from 1971-1975. Russell served on the first camp staff in 1960 as Stahlman’s Waterfront Director before returning again as a Provisional Leader in 1970. The following is the obituary from the TheTennessean.com.
“RUSSELL, Garland Brooks Age 86 of Mt. Juliet, passed away on November 8, 2011. Preceded in death by parents, Percy and Bessie Russell; and brothers, Gene, Walter, Ross and Mallory Russell. Survived by loving wife of 57 years, Marlene Russell; daughters, Sharon (Louis) Morphis, Amy (Greg) Cooper and Jan Jacobs; grandchildren, Jay Spurlock, Casey Pigue and Tori Cooper; brother, Roy (Vivian) Russell; and a host of nieces and nephews. After a successful 50 year career of coaching in Nashville with private and area Middle TN schools, he considered himself an educator in building the character of man first, and an educator of the game second. He will be missed and remembered with great admiration by all whose lives he touched throughout the years. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011 with Dr. Stephen Flatt officiating. Interment to follow in The Field of Honor garden at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Friends and family to serve as Active Pallbearers. The family will receive friends today from two o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock this evening at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, and again two hours prior to the service on Friday.”
