Naming the Unknowns, February 10, 2016

This week’s unknown is from Camp Parnell in the early 1980s.  At least, we’re pretty sure the photo is from the early 1980s.  It could be the late 1970s.  Without a clear view of the patch, it is difficult to know for sure! Nevertheless, this is clearly a Con-Yard staff member (you can tell from the snake!).

So, who is this person? What year do you think this was?  Any ideas on who took the photo?

Boxwell Patches

Just like any summer camp, patches are an important part of the summer camp experience.  Over the next few weeks, we’ll showcase some of the summer camp patches we have on hand.

To kick things off, we want to give thanks to Boyd Williams.  While not a staff member, Williams is a life long Scouter from Troop 135 in Franklin and has been very involved with the OA.  But for our purposes, he is important because he has been a collector and curator of every single patch from Middle Tennessee Council he can get his hands on!

In this case, Williams has been able to do what our network of staff members wasn’t able to do: he provided Staff Hat patches from 1977 and 1983!  The 1983 patch is shown here, but both the 1983 and the 1977 have been added to our Staff Hats Project page.

Williams also maintains his own website: Middle Tennessee Council Patches.  Check out the site to see Boxwell (and other Middle Tennessee Council) patches over the years!

Naming the Unknowns, February 3, 2016

Since we did so well with last week’s Naming the Unknowns, we thought we would continue this series. Again, this scene is a July 4th campfire. Our initial notes say it is from 1960, but given some of the people in the rest of the series, 1960 is likely not correct. 1970, or at least the late 1960s, seems more reasonable.  We do know that’s Tom Parker seated in the background.

So, how many can you name? Do you know what year this took place?
