Boxwell Reservation, 1996

30 years ago was Larry Green’s second summer as Reservation Director.  It was an interesting summer for Green.  Tom Willhite had retired in 1994, but stuck around as an independent contractor in 1995 to oversee construction from the capital campaign.  That work was now done.  1995 had also seen the arrival of a new Council Executive, Joe Long.  Long was a guest to camp in 1995, but by 1996, he was exerting his influence, which created a lot stress for Green.

In 1996, Cubworld ran its first summer.  Savantha Tesar was the very first program director and Alan Hamlin with Shane Gladden were the Camp Directors. The Boat Harbor had reopened because of the capital Campaign.  Rick (now Reese) Ehler was the Director.  Lance Ussery ran COPE.  At Stahlman, Ron Ramsey began his first summer as Program Director and Moses Caballero was his Camp Director.  At Parnell, Kerry Parker was Program Director and Kevin Beirnes his Camp Director.  Bill Freeman was entering his first summer as Head Ranger and Sandy Haller took over for the recently retired Pearl Schleicher.  Russ Parham was still the Business Manger, a position he had held since 1980.

Here are the staff photos for Stahlman and Parnell.

An early Red Staff hat

From 1977 to Willhite’s last year in 1994, there was a red staff hat. The hat and the patch were purchased separately with the patch being sewn on by Willhite’s wife, Marie. The patches were different most years, though the differences were sometimes subtle. The hat started as a solid cloth cap, but in 1984 switched a mesh “trucker” hat that was donated by the Murfreesboro CO-OP. Larry Green continued the red hat tradition during his two years in 1995 and 1996.

A sort of cult developed around the hat. Hats were “on loan” until the end of summer. You didn’t keep your hat if you didn’t finish the summer. Hats were not given to individuals who were not part of the staff. You didn’t draw on or deface your hat. If you fired, you turned in your hat. When you left the reservation with your staff hat on at the end of the summer, you had earned it.

Seen here is one of the earliest staff hats, this one from the summer of 1978, which also happened to be Matthew Bailey’s first summer. As a fun historical side note, Bailey started at Stahlman in 1978 and then moved to Parnell in 1979 when Stahlman closed for the summer. He remained Parnell-Craig staff, making him part of “the Great Staff Switch.”

The Adventures of Gertie, Junior Ranger

Luggage Run

Gertie loves being useful.  One of the great things about being a junior ranger is that Gertie gets to help with luggage runs again.  Luggage and trash were common tasks in the 1990s, so it is good to get back in the game.  Our Junior Ranger has been helping move Cubs and families into CubWorld.  It’s been grand!

What’s even more exciting is this temporary cape Gertie gets to wear.  Of course, it’s just a tarp to help keep gear dry, but it feels like a stylish new accessory.  It’s fun to drive around camp with a cape flopping behind!

Boxwell Reservation, 1986

40 years ago Tom Willhite was well into his run as reservation director.  By this point, he knew how to make things happen and wasn’t struggling to just make camp survive anymore.  In fact, he had not only run what he called a ‘quasi’ capital campaign–“quasi” because it was done on the quiet–but he brought a whole new program to Boxwell the year before: COPE.  Generally speaking, Willhite had solid leadership by this point and camp could pretty much run itself.  Which was good, because 1986 was just a wee bit weird.

The 1980s were the Barnett-Ragsdale years, but in 1986 both Jerry Barnett and Ernie Ragsdale missed the summer. Kerry Parker was Program Director at Camp Craig with Chuck Simmons was his camp director.  At Stahlman Harold Tracy stepped in for Ragsdale with Michael Morgan as Camp Director. Christy Willhite ran Murrey and Pearl Schleicher was still running the kitchen.  Willie Claud was now head ranger and Carl Hyland was running the new COPE program.  Back in Nashville, Hershel Tolbert was Council Executive.

Here are the staff photos for Craig.  We have no Stahlman staff photo for 1986. As a placeholder, here is the patch from the staff hat that summer.  The red staff hat was by now a staple of staff life.

Bailey’s Dutch Plaque

One of the nice benefits of a Staff Reunion is that fascinating camp-related material floats our way. Some items are mundane (a box full of Skill Awards for instance), but others can be really interesting. A photo of something we haven’t seen before. One of the very first red staff hats. Over the next few weeks we’ll be showing off some of those gifts.

This week is a plaque by the late, great Claus “Dutch” Mann. Dutch plaques are always a hit at Reunions in part because he wasn’t there every summer and when he was, he only made the plaques for directors. Thus, to get a Dutch plaque was a real treat. An interesting side note: there is often something misspelled on the plaque, though we never had the chance to ask if this was a deliberate, artistic choice!

This plaque belonged to Matthew Bailey of Parnell Staff. In 1988, he was Camp Commissioner, though as Bailey explained, “At that time Camp Commissioners didn’t do much. I hauled mulch a lot. I must have been a bit demanding, given the nature of Dutch’s plaque.” Bailey was normally a Con-Yard man and 1988 was his last summer, making this plaque a unique end to a run that began back in 1978. Dutch’s last summer would be 1996.
