The Adventures of Gertie, Junior Ranger

A Three Hour Tour?

Ever since that trip to the CubWorld Aquatics Area, Gertie has really been thinking about doing some boating.  None of the boats are out at the Harbor yet, but instead stored here in the Travis-Adkins Maintenance Area.  There are several to choose from!

Still, Gertie can’t help thinking about her time in the 1990s when the staff would sing a song called “Gilligan’s Island.”  It was a harrowing tale. Those poor people were stranded on an island for years and they were just trying to take a quick, three-hour boat trip!  She really needs to take her swim test before she gets out on the water.

Emergency Drill!

As a good Junior Ranger, Gertie wants to be prepared for an emergency. So, she’s running a drill here by backing up to the loading dock at the new Harwell Leadership Center.  As you can see, she’s the perfect height to load up or unload from that bay.

Gertie likes to think ahead.  What if the supply truck breaks down and she has to carry supplies to the dining hall? What if the camp food truck breaks down and she has to carry food to Craig or CubWorld?  What if someone needs a ride to the Crab right now?! Gertie follows the Scout Motto: Be Prepared!

Where’s the Dump?

She won’t admit it if you ask her, but Gertie has been around camp for awhile. As exciting as the new areas are, she often reminisces about old areas too.  Places where she had a lot of fun with Ranger Justin when they first met.  But some of those places aren’t what they used to be.

Where is the dump?!? Gertie is mystified.  She’s confident there used to be a big hole RIGHT HERE. People stood in her bed and poured things into that big hole.  A fire even singed her backside once! Where did the dump go?

CubWorld Aquatics Center

Gertie has really been amazed at how much has changed at Boxwell since she used to work here.  Some buildings have gotten a face lift, but there are parts of the camp that are completely different from when she here in the 1990s.  If she wants to be a good Junior Ranger, she needs to be familiar with ALL the areas, especially the new ones.

So, Gertie is checking out the CubWorld Aquatics Area.  There aren’t boats here right now, but the Buddy Board is up.  This raises all kinds of questions for our Junior Ranger.  Does she need to take swim test? Does she need a buddy tag?  Is there a boat big enough for her to enjoy the lake?

Helping Out!

It’s a big weekend at Boxwell this weekend.  Round Tuit and Beaver Days are both happening this weekend, which means there will be a lot of hands on deck to help get Boxwell ready for summer camp.

Our Junior Ranger is ready to help too!  Gertie has been collecting downed branches, limbs, and all sorts of wooden debris.  She’s been making a big burn pile behind the compound.  Junior Ranger Gertie is going to make sure camp is ready to go!
